Mr. Jón Gunnarsson, Minister of Transport and Local Government since January 11th 2017. 

Jón Gunnarsson, born in 1956, has been a Member of Parliament for the Independence Party in the Southwest Constituency since 2007.

He graduated from the Metalworking Department at Reykjavík Technical School in 1975 and received a degree in Business Administration from the University of Iceland School of Continuing Education in 1996. He was a farmer from 1981-1985, served as supervisor of the advertising and subscription department at Channel 2 from 1986-1990, and was director of marketing at Oddi hf. from 1991-1993. From 1994-2004, he operated the import company Rún ehf. together with his wife, and from 2005-2007 he was managing director of ICE-SAR, the Icelandic association for search and rescue. Jón has been active in a variety of organisations. He was president of ICE-SAR, and sat on the Independence Party's Representative Council for the Northwest Iceland Constituency, and since 1995 has been president of Sjávarnytjar, an association dedicated to the sensible utilisation of marine products. Moreover, he has sat on a number of Parliamentary committees and was chair of the Industrial Affairs Committee from 2013-2016. He is married to businesswoman Margrét Halla Ragnarsdóttir, with whom he has three children.
